Dentures: Keeping Them Fit and Healthy

Denture and Oral Hygiene

Dentures PicIf you wear full or partial dentures, remember that bacterial plaque can build up on them too. Just like your natural set of teeth they need to be cleaned every day. Rinse your dentures before brushing, then use a soft-bristled toothbrush coupled with a non-abrasive cleaner specifically made for dentures. Look for products that have the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Besides cleaning your dentures you need to clean your mouth as well. Brush your gums, cheeks, and tongue to remove any bacteria and reduce the risk of gum infection, irritation, bad breath, or any other oral problem.

Gum Health

You need to take the dentures out of your mouth for a minimum of 4 hours every 24 hours. This helps keep the lining of your mouth healthy. The most preferable and convenient time to remove your full or partial dentures is at night.

Denture Misconception

Most people who have dentures think they do not need to visit the dentist anymore. But this is not true. The fit of your dentures can change over time and they can also wear down. If you visit the dentist frequently enough, he or she will be able to identify these kinds of issues and can adjust your denture to prevent mouth sores or with any difficulties eating. The dentist will also carefully analyze the overall health of your mouth and gums. This will also include a check for any signs of mouth cancer.

Denture Misfit

A series of recent research studies have shown that people who wear dentures consume less fruits and vegetables and more processed foods which are softer and less nutritious. If you are finding it difficult to chew healthy foods then you need to visit your dentist to discuss the issue. Perhaps your denture needs to be adjusted or replaced for a newer, more durable design.
